    Phi Phi Don

Phi Phi Don is the only inhabited island in the Phi Phi archipelago — a narrow strip of land caught between two beautiful bays, where longtail boats bob in the shallows, steep limestone cliffs form the horizon, and the rhythm of island life carries on just as it has for generations. As part of the Phi Phi Islands group in the Andaman Sea, roughly 40 to 45 kilometres from Phuket, it serves as the natural anchor point for any Phi Phi boat tour, whether you are watching the sunrise paint the cliffs on the way out or making a final stop before the journey home.

On a Simba Sea Trips Phi Phi sunrise tour, Phi Phi Don is where you will often encounter snorkeling in the sheltered bays, glimpse the daily life of the island community, and feel the particular energy that comes from a place that is at once a working village and one of Thailand’s most visited natural destinations.

    Why Visit Phi Phi Don?

    Image

For many visitors to the Phi Phi Islands, the uninhabited Phi Phi Leh and its famous Maya Bay receive most of the early attention. But Phi Phi Don has its own distinct appeal that lingers long after you have left.

The island sits on a narrow isthmus between Ton Sai Bay on the south and Loh Dalum Bay on the north. From the sea, the views are immediately striking — white sand beaches backed by a ridge of jungle-covered hills, limestone peaks rising behind the village, and the constant movement of boats large and small. The village itself is compact and full of character: narrow pathways lined with small restaurants, dive shops, local stalls, and family-run accommodation. It does not feel manufactured for tourists so much as shaped around them over time, and that distinction is noticeable.

Away from the village, the island’s bays offer calm, clear water with patches of live coral and a variety of tropical fish species — making it a rewarding spot for snorkeling without needing to travel far from shore. For those who want a little more altitude, the famous Phi Phi viewpoint offers a sweeping panorama across both bays and has become one of the most photographed vistas in southern Thailand.

    Experience

What to Expect at Phi Phi Don

    Arrival and First Impressions

Approaching Phi Phi Don by speedboat in the early morning is a genuinely memorable moment. The limestone cliffs catch the light from the east, and the village comes into view between the two bays. If conditions allow, your crew will point out landmarks, explain what you are seeing, and give you a sense of the island’s geography before the busier tour boats begin to arrive.

    Snorkeling in the Sheltered Bays

The bays around Phi Phi Don offer a mix of shallow reef and sandy seafloor, making snorkeling easy and accessible. Entry points are usually calm, with good water clarity during the dry season. Common marine life includes parrotfish, wrasse, butterflyfish, and occasionally blacktip reef sharks in more protected areas. Simba’s crew select the best snorkeling spot based on the day’s conditions.

    The Phi Phi Viewpoint

The viewpoint above the village is reached by a short but steep walk. From the top, the view opens over both Ton Sai Bay and Loh Dalum Bay, with sweeping views of the surrounding sea. While it’s a great spot for photos, it is generally not included in a standard day tour from Phuket and is better suited for guests staying overnight on the island.

How We Visit Phi Phi Don on Our Phi Phi Islands Tour

How We Visit Phi Phi Don on Our Phi Phi Islands Tour

Phi Phi Don features as part of our Phi Phi sunrise tour and our private Phi Phi Islands charters. On a join-in sunrise tour, guests are collected from their hotels in Phuket from around 05:00 and depart the marina at approximately 06:00. The crossing takes around an hour, with a sunrise stop along the way.

After reaching Phi Phi Leh for Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon in the early morning, the tour typically moves to the waters around Phi Phi Don for snorkeling, with the crew selecting a bay suited to the day’s conditions. There is time on the water and, depending on the itinerary, a short period to take in the views of the island from the boat.

On a private Phi Phi Islands charter, the pace and focus can be shaped more closely to your group’s preferences — including longer time at the snorkeling spots or a closer look at the bay scenery. Both tour formats maintain Simba’s standard of small group sizes (around 14 to 16 guests on join-in tours, capped at approximately 18 adults), attentive crew, and all-inclusive pricing covering hotel transfers, snorkel equipment, national park fees, and refreshments throughout the day.

    Seasonal Overview

    Seasonal Overview

High season — broadly November through April

Phi Phi Don can be visited year-round, though the experience differs between seasons. The high season — broadly November through April — brings calmer seas, stronger sunshine, and the best conditions for snorkeling and open water travel. Visibility underwater is typically at its clearest during these months.

    Low season

The low season from roughly May to October sees more varied weather and occasional rougher crossings. Tours from Phuket still run when conditions are safe, and Simba monitors forecasts closely and adjusts routes where necessary. The island is noticeably quieter during these months, which some travellers find appealing.

Because Simba's Phi Phi sunrise tours depart from Phuket before dawn, guests typically arrive at Phi Phi Don during the quietest window of the morning regardless of season, before the bulk of day boats from other departure points begin to arrive.
